TL;DR

Infrastructure + AI are merging

Cloudflare, Vercel, and GoDaddy are rebuilding their platforms around AI inference and agent identity. The CDN era is over — the agentic cloud era is beginning.

Coding tools are the breakout

Claude Code hit $2.5B run-rate. Cursor reached $2B ARR in under 3 years — the fastest B2B scaling on record. 84% of developers now use or plan to use AI tools.

Watch the trust gap

Only 3% of developers 'highly trust' AI code. Gartner warns 40%+ of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by end of 2027. Adoption doesn't equal reliability.

The $2.59 Trillion Moment

AI spending is not slowing down. It is accelerating.

Gartner's May 19, 2026 forecast puts worldwide AI spending at $2.59 trillion in 2026 — a 47% increase year-over-year, up from a January 2026 forecast of $2.52T. AI infrastructure alone exceeds 45% of that spend. AI models spending is up ~110%. IDC separately projects full-stack AI spend reaching $1.3T by 2029 at a 31.9% CAGR.

Total AI Spending Trajectory ($T)

Gartner / IDC composite — 2026F+ are forecast

McKinsey estimates generative AI could generate $2.6–4.4 trillion in annual economic value. The question is no longer whether AI transforms software — it's which layer captures the value.

The Agentic Web Infrastructure Race

On July 1, 2025 — self-declared “Content Independence Day” — Cloudflare became the first major infrastructure company to block AI crawlers by default and launched Pay Per Crawl, a marketplace letting publishers charge AI crawlers via HTTP 402. The data behind the decision was stark:

AI Crawler Crawl-to-Referral Ratio (Jun 2025)

Pages crawled per page of traffic referred back to publishers

Google crawled ~14 pages per referral. OpenAI: ~1,700:1. Anthropic's ClaudeBot: tens-of-thousands-to-one. Condé Nast, TIME, AP, and The Atlantic joined the Pay Per Crawl marketplace. In September 2025, Cloudflare and Coinbase launched the x402 Foundation— a stablecoin-based machine payment standard via HTTP 402. On April 7, 2026, Cloudflare and GoDaddy announced a partnership for agent identity: GoDaddy's Agent Name Service (DNS + PKI), Cloudflare's Web Bot Auth, and the Signature Agent Card.

The AI Coding Explosion

The fastest-growing software
category in history.

Cursor reached $2B ARR in under three years— the fastest B2B scaling on record. Anthropic's run-rate revenue jumped from $1B (Dec 2024) to $47B (May 2026), a 47× increase in 18 months. Claude Code alone crossed $2.5B annualized by February 2026, with enterprise representing over half.

The Trust Paradox

84% adoption.
3% deep trust.

Stack Overflow's 2025 survey (49,000+ developers, 177 countries) reveals the defining tension of this moment: near-universal adoption exists alongside collapsing confidence. Positive sentiment toward AI fell from 70%+ in 2023–2024 to 60% in 2025. More developers now actively distrust AI accuracy (46%) than trust it (33%). Only 3% “highly trust” AI output. The top frustration, cited by 66%: “AI solutions that are almost right, but not quite.”

⚠️ METR Study (Jul 2025)

Randomized controlled trial found experienced open-source developers were 19% slower with AI tools even as they believed AI sped them up. (METR flagged self-selection caveats, but the warning stands.)

Andrej Karpathy, Sequoia Ascent, Apr 2026

The coiner of “vibe coding” drew a sharper line: vibe coding raises the floor, letting almost anyone describe software into existence, while agentic engineering raises the ceiling — the professional discipline of coordinating fallible agents while preserving correctness. He frames them as complementary, not one replacing the other.

The Tool Race

AI coding tool market share

JetBrains January 2026 survey shows GitHub Copilot leading workplace usage at 29%, with Cursor and Claude Code tied at 18%. GitHub Copilot has ~20M users and 140K+ organizations, but growth is slowing as agentic-first tools eat into its share.

Key Findings

Four things that matter now.

1

Edge + AI inference is the new battleground

Cloudflare rebuilt its platform around Workers AI (serverless GPU inference across 300+ cities), its Rust 'Infire' inference engine, Vectorize vector DB, and containers. Vercel's Fluid Compute reports up to 90% inference cost savings vs. per-invocation Lambda. The thesis: by vertically integrating compute + state + inference, these platforms remove the 'integration tax' of AWS/GCP for agentic systems.

2

Agentic coding tools are the fastest-growing B2B category ever

Cursor went $100M → $2B ARR in 13 months. Claude Code went from launch (May 2025) to $2.5B annualized revenue in 9 months. Anthropic's total valuation went from $380B to $965B in 3 months. These are not normal growth rates — they reflect a category transition, not a product launch.

3

The agentic web is being built in real time

Cloudflare Pay Per Crawl (HTTP 402), the x402 Foundation with Coinbase (stablecoin machine payments), GoDaddy's Agent Name Service (DNS-based agent identity), and Cloudflare Web Bot Auth are all live or in GA. The infrastructure for AI agents to identify themselves, pay for content, and transact is being standardized now.

4

The trust gap is the biggest risk to continued growth

Only 3% of developers 'highly trust' AI code. A controlled trial (METR, Jul 2025) found experienced developers were 19% slower with AI tools. Gartner warns 40%+ of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by end of 2027. The durability of current valuations depends entirely on closing this gap.

Recommendations

What to do about it.

Developers & Teams

Now

  • Adopt an integrated platform (Cloudflare or Vercel) — avoid stitching point tools
  • Run a three-tool experiment: Copilot (breadth), Cursor (agentic multi-file), Claude Code (long-horizon)
  • Treat all AI output as untrusted — mandate code review and security scanning
  • The trust data is stark: only 3% highly trust AI code

Platform & Infra Buyers

Next 6–12 months

  • Implement AI crawler controls (Cloudflare AI Crawl Control) now if you publish content
  • Evaluate agent identity standards (Web Bot Auth, GoDaddy ANS) before they become table stakes
  • Benchmark edge AI inference cost — providers claim up to 90% savings on spiky workloads
  • Test x402/HTTP 402 payment rails for any content monetization

Investors & Strategists

12–36 months

  • Overweight the autonomous/generative end of the stack (AI coding agents, agent infrastructure)
  • Underwrite the risk: Cursor at ~25x ARR, Anthropic at $965B — these price perfection
  • Gartner: 40%+ of agentic AI projects cancelled by end of 2027
  • Watch for: revenue growth collapse, undifferentiated tool M&A, trust gap widening

Caveats & Methodology

What to take with a grain of salt.

Forecast spread is enormous

Edge computing estimates range from $168B to $658B for 2025/2026 depending on scope (hardware-only vs. full-stack vs. enterprise-only). Never compare estimates from different firms without checking methodology.

Run-rate ≠ GAAP revenue

Anthropic's, Cursor's, and Claude Code's figures are annualized run-rates (point-in-time snapshots), not audited full-year revenue. Some are reported gross (including cloud reseller pass-throughs) which can inflate top-line significantly.

Beware the '46% of code is AI-generated' stat

This traces to GitHub 2023 data describing Copilot usage among developers who actively use Copilot — not all code globally. Gartner separately projects AI could generate the majority of new code by end of 2026, but that is a forecast.

The trust paradox is unresolved

Adoption is near-universal while trust is at record lows. Controlled studies found AI tools can reduce code quality/security even as developers feel more productive. Current growth trajectories depend on closing this gap.

Hype-cycle risk is real

Gartner places AI in the 'Trough of Disillusionment' for 2026. 'Vibe coding' was declared passé by its own inventor in under 12 months. Treat the most aggressive private valuations and 2035 projections as scenarios, not certainties.
