I pulled DigitalOcean's Basic Droplet ladder directly from their own pricing page— it's fully public and, as of January 2026, billed per-second rather than per-hour. Hetzner and Vultr don't render full pricing tables to a plain fetch, so I cross-checked their entry tiers against a pricing aggregator and multiple independent reviews before using any figure below; where sources disagreed I used the lower-confidence range rather than picking the most favorable number.

Being direct about this: renting and benchmarking three cloud instances costs real money and I'm not going to fabricate throughput numbers to avoid saying so. Instead, the figures below come from an independently published, methodology-documented comparison at bitdoze.com, which tested identical 2 vCPU / 2GB instances — Hetzner CPX11, a DigitalOcean Premium droplet, and Vultr's Intel high-frequency tier — running the same Ubuntu 22.04 + CloudPanel + MariaDB + WordPress stack with no caching or CDN in front, on East Coast datacenters. Sysbench measured CPU, and sequential read measured disk throughput.

Vultr's NVMe-backed high-frequency instance led both charts — roughly 16% more multi-core throughput than Hetzner's AMD box, and nearly 3x the sequential read speed of either competitor. Hetzner still out-performed DigitalOcean's Premium tier on CPU despite costing roughly a quarter of the price, which is the first sign that price and performance don't move together here.
Price-to-Performance
This chart isn't a new benchmark — it's the cited sysbench multi-core score from above divided by the cited monthly price for the same instance, so you can see raw throughput and value as two separate questions. Hetzner wins clearly on value per dollar precisely because its absolute performance is competitive at a much lower price; Vultr wins on raw throughput because the NVMe-backed tier is genuinely faster, not because it's cheap.

Which number matters depends on the workload. A CPU-bound background job queue that's cost-sensitive and tolerant of moderate latency should lean toward Hetzner's price-per-op advantage. A database or anything disk-I/O-bound that needs to feel snappy under load is worth paying Vultr's premium for — the sequential-read gap in the previous section is large enough to matter for real query latency, not just a benchmark number. None of the numbers in this post are mine. If you self-host anything small, start from the workload — CPU-bound and cost-sensitive points at Hetzner, disk-latency-sensitive points at Vultr's NVMe tier — rather than the sticker price alone.
